CAM 18 – READING Test 1 Passage 2

Highlight
The Marvel of Ant Navigation

Ants are ubiquitous, but their navigational skills are truly extraordinary. Unlike humans who rely on visual landmarks or GPS, many ant species navigate through a combination of innate biological mechanisms. For instance, the desert ant Cataglyphis fortis inhabits the barren, featureless salt pans of the Sahara. Finding food in this scorching environment is a race against time, and the ant must return to its nest quickly to survive.

To achieve this, the desert ant employs a technique known as path integration. As the ant wanders in search of food, its brain constantly calculates the distance and direction traveled from the nest. It uses the sun’s position as a compass. Even when the sun is hidden behind clouds, the ant can detect polarized light patterns in the sky to maintain its bearings.

In addition to solar navigation, scientists have discovered that ants essentially count their steps. In a fascinating experiment, researchers manipulated the leg lengths of ants. Ants with elongated legs (walking on stilts) overshot their nest entrance, while those with shortened legs (stumps) fell short. This proved that they possess an internal pedometer to measure distance.

Forest-dwelling ants, on the other hand, face a different challenge. The dense canopy obscures the sky, making solar navigation unreliable. Instead, these species rely heavily on pheromone trails. When a foraging ant finds a food source, it leaves a chemical trail on its way back to the colony. Other ants detect these chemicals using their highly sensitive antennae and follow the trail to the food. The trail becomes stronger as more ants use it.

Interestingly, ants also display visual memory. Wood ants, which live in complex woodland environments, can memorize the shapes of the trees overhead. They take a mental snapshot of the skyward view from their nest and compare it to their current view to find their way home.

The combination of these methods—path integration, step-counting, chemical signaling, and visual memory—makes the ant one of the most efficient navigators in the animal kingdom. Their tiny brains, containing only a fraction of the neurons of a human brain, process this complex spatial information with remarkable accuracy.
