The question of whether children should be given the autonomy to make their own choices is a matter of intense debate. While some argue that this could lead to a selfish society1, I believe that empowering children to decide on certain matters is vital for their development.
On the one hand, critics argue that excessive freedom can make children to become2 self-centered. If a child is always allowed to choose what they eat or wear without any guidance, they may start to believe that their desires are more important than those of others. This habit result in3 a lack of empathy and social responsibility. For instance, children who never learn to compromise at home might struggle to work in teams when they enters4 adulthood.
On the other hand, I side with those who believe that making decision for5 everyday matters is a necessary learning process. Firstly, it fosters independence and self-confidence. When children choose their own clothes or hobbies, they learn to express their personality and take responsibility for their prefer6. Secondly, this practice prepares them for more complex choices in the future7. By practicing decision-making on small things, children develop critical thinking skills that are essential in the modern life8.
In conclusion, while total freedom without discipline may lead to selfish9, I believe that letting children make their own choices under parental guidance is beneficial. It strikes a balance between building character and developing essential life skills.
